Developmental Editing

Includes but not limited to

Assisting the author in connecting with their audience through style, theme, voice, tone, etc. For example, clarifying narrative voice and making sure that all themes have a through line.
Fix issues with plot holes, characterization, organization, chronology, etc.
Evaluating character arcs, plot structure, and pacing.
Recommending scene additions or removals.
Noting any missing sense or substance for readers.

Clients will receive developmental edits in an electronic PDF different from the client's manuscript. Timeline based on the length of the client's manuscript.

This is a separate service from Copyediting.

Fiction: $50 per hour

Non-fiction: $60 per hour

Copyediting

Includes but not limited to

Noting consistency for spelling, capitalization, hyphenation, and use of numbers and abbreviations.
Identifying run-on sentences, unnecessary words, and redundancies.
Detecting and correcting shifts in tone and point of view.
Ensuring phrasing is natural, clear, and consistent.
Refining flow, readability, grammar, sentence structure, and word choice.
Ensuring the story is effectively communicated.
Correcting punctuation and spelling.

Clients will receive line edits via Track Changes in an electronic Word Doc of their manuscript. Timeline based on the length of the client's manuscript.

FAQs

Where do I need to be in my manuscript for proper editing services?

It depends on the editor, but overall, it's best for a manuscript to be complete with the author already having reviewed it themselves at least once. This author review is so the author can fix any "easy" or "obvious" to the author issues and allows the editor to focus on edits that the author is having trouble with or can't see themselves. Query the editor to be sure.

If I'm interested in developmental edits, can an editor work with me on my unfinished manuscript or outline?

Again, it depends on the the editor. It is possible to use developmental edits as guide to help connect scenes, discover plot holes, etc. Query the editor to be sure.

What's the timeline for getting back my edits?

The timeline depends on how long a manuscript is. A standard novel is roughly 70,000 to 100,000 words. On the shorter side, it may take about a month for a thorough review, and on the longer side, it may take a couple more. A question to discuss during a consultation.
